In
Hebrews 11, verses 1 and 2, the writer to the Hebrews introduces the topic of
faith with the words, "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and
certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for."
This is perhaps the most well recognised, and accepted verse in Scripture that
relates directly to the subject of "Faith".
What does it mean by "what we do not see"?
Well, I believe that it is the ability to observe the things around us (and I
include scientific observation) and still be able to recognise the hand of God
in all that we see. It is the bit that cannot be seen in what we see.
In practical experience, it means that we can be "grounded" in our life, and our
faith. We don't have any illusions about our circumstances - physical or
otherwise, seeing them for what they are, but also being aware of the fact of
God's existence and evidence of this being in everything around us, and in us.
To me, there is no issue to debate regarding "Creation versus Evolution". I
"see" the evidence for both - they are not contradictory, but different views of
the same facts that illustrate the work of God.
Hebrews 11, verse 5 goes on to state, "And without faith it is impossible to
please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that
he rewards those who earnestly seek him."
To me, this is pivotal in the expression of my faith. I can both know God and
know that I please him as a result of my faith, which I know to be solid as the
Rock. Simply to "come to God", to know his presence and strength is indeed a
reward - here and now - not some time by and by when I die. By all means I look
forward to the Judgement, but I also enjoy the
rewards of God today.
