Whanganui UCOL
Summer School of the Arts
From 6th to 12th January 2008 I was privileged to
attend the Whanganui UCOL Summer School of the Arts to study
painting using water colours with
Ed Labadie.

Ed sets us an example with his work.

Class photo.
I took the opportunity to learn how to apply water
colours (having hardly ever used them) and to extend my
understanding of art in general and how best to improve my own
particular "style".
I really enjoyed it, and present a few samples of my
work here. Many were done with an experimental attitude of
"having fun"
(Click on the small images
below to view larger ones.)
Radical
(for me!) |
Here are some of the results of my
experiments with the brilliant colours available from
water colours. I have for some time wanted to
experiment with abstracted forms and "unreal" colours, and
was really pleased to get these results. |
 |
Kapiti
Island Water Colour
This was loosely based on
the Kapiti
Island Sunset photograph that I took from
the top of Paekakariki Hill, north of
Wellington. |
 |
Spaced Out 1
This
was my first
interpretation of the methodology taught to us by Ed. |
 |
Spaced Out 2
This
was my second
interpretation of the methodology taught to us by Ed. |

|
The following paintings were somewhat
less radical (but a challenge all the same). I
tried to apply the unfamiliar medium of water colours to
my old familiar subjects - landscapes of various sorts.
I was happy with some results, and less so with others.
Although these were done as exercises, and I think my
relative inexperience with water colour shows, I share
them with you here; |
 |
Kowhai Park Wanganui
We went into
Kowhai Park to do some
sketching and painting from real life subjects. I
chose to do the iconic octopus swing set and clock tower
slide. |
 |
Karekare Beach Stream
Loosely based on a photo taken at
Karekare Beach, but liberally "adjusted" to experiment
with aspects of composition and to give it a different
"feel". |
 |
Western Lake Wakatipu
This painting was the result of an
exercise where Ed limited us to just 15 brush-strokes,
or elements that were added as part of a single process. |
 |
Black
and White Collage
This work was done as an exercise in
free expression, followed by careful composition, using pieces
cut from the free expression exercise. |
