This is where I discuss the development of particular works – a sort of electronic "visual diary". Initially, I decided not to show the original photographs on which my paintings were based, but have since concluded that the photo is part of the creative process that I went through and the differences between the photographs and the final paintings portray the personal way in which I see each subject. I used to try to accurately portray photo-realistic shapes and colours, but have more recently come to value the expressiveness that can come with being more relaxed about those elements, and instead concentrating on my feelings for the subject. This then allows me to use colours that are not really present in the photograph, which nevertheless give an overall impression that is similar to the photograph, while giving what I feel is an underlying life and vibrancy that expresses my feelings. (Click on the small images below to view a few details about the development of each work.)
"The writing of notes, letters and journals is good for creators. Writing is learning. Writing shares joy, delight, triumph, struggle, disappointment and disaster. The free exchange of ideas and processes helps us to think about what we are doing and where we're going. This mutuality is part of our self-education. In a lifetime of painting I've learned that subjects taken for granted need often to be revisited and re-examined. And like all of us, I have minor epiphanies and esoteric insights." - Robert Genn, Friday 14th July 2006. This quotation expresses my motivation for this area of "My Space".
